Gardening Tips:

Tired of going into a nursery & not getting help or the 'help' not knowing anything? At Gardener's World we take pride in our knowledgeable staff. If we don't know the answer, we will do whatever research it takes to find an answer that works. Educating people about plants, the soil, watering, etc. is what we're all about. Sign up for our free classes & see why people come to us when they want real answers.

Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:

Incorporate plants that filter toxins out of the air. Here are a few examples of the kinds of toxins & the plants that filter them.

Benzene:
English ivy, Chinese Evergreen, Red-edged Dracaena, Gerbera daisy, chrysanthemum, & peace lily.

Formaldehyde:
Spider plant, bamboo palm, ficus, pothos, pygmy date palm, philodendron, & mother-in-law's tongue.

Trichloroethylene:
Chrysanthemum, peace lily, Gerbera daisy, & Janet Craig Dracaena.

Feature Plant
Poinsettia(Euphorbia pulcherrima)

I mistakenly reported in last week's email that we would have 'Marble Star', but we don't. Instead we have 'Ice Punch'.

There's a common misconception that poinsettias are poisonous. Perhaps because most plants of the spurge family are toxic & the name poinsettia sounds too close to the word poison. Most notably, however, is the urban legend from 1919 about a 2-year-old child of a U.S. Army Officer dying from ingesting poinsettia leaves. There was never any proof of this & later it was determined to be hearsay. Poisendex is the source of poison information used by the majority of poison control centers. It says that a 50-pound child would have to eat over a pound & a half of leaves (500-600 leaves) to exceed the doses used in an Ohio State University & the American Society of Florists research study. The study tested several parts of the plant on rats & concluded that no parts of the plant were toxic, even when the rats were given large doses. No other consumer plant has been more tested for toxicity than the poinsettia. So, let's stop the rumors & stick to the facts!

Peppermint Twist
Hands Off for Winter-Pruning, Watering & Fertilizing
Longtime residents know that winter gardening in the desert southwest is a dream. Set your watering time clocks for less frequency, fertilize on Labor Day, and take your pruners out in January. Those not familiar with gardening in our winter climate may not be used to this hands-off approach and may fall into three common over-management habits: over watering, over pruning, and over fertilizing. Over watering is the most common of all gardening mistakes even in the summertime! Plant wilt and general failure to thrive associated with lack of water are also symptoms of over watering. Diagnosing over or under watering is done by what I call the 'screwdriver test'. Use a screwdriver, or other similar shaped object, and poke a hole in the ground, then check for moisture in the soil. If the soil is moist, your plant is wilting from over watering. Also common in the winter is over pruning. Pruning every month is over doing it. Plant growth slows when temperatures fall and the plant doesn't require the same kind of attention that it did when temperatures were over 100ºF. Shrubs like Texas Sage, Dwarf Oleanders, and Cape Honeysuckle really only need pruning three times a year: right after summer, after the danger of frost has past, and just before the heat of the summer arrives. Plants that are over pruned don't get a chance to flower and mature. Another common pruning mistake is pruning off frost damage. We may experience below freezing temperatures several times throughout the winter, which means that plants may experience frost damage several times. Each time temperatures freeze, a portion of the plant will freeze back from the tip of whatever branch is exposed. If you trim off the damage each time, the branch will be exposed to new damage. The frost damage from the first frost will protect the inner branches throughout the winter. So, as tempting as it is to cut off the ugly damage, wait until after frost danger has past, usually in March. Trees, as a rule, should only receive major pruning when dormant in winter. Tree sap flows much more slowly when the tree is dormant, so if we prune in January they won't bleed sap. All desert trees and all deciduous trees (that is trees that lose their leaves), should be pruned in January. Even many evergreens can be pruned safely in winter. Prune citrus trees, on the other hand, after the fruit is harvested and before the tree blooms again. Light pruning like shaping, cutting off suckers, and thinning before summer storms can be done year-round. Over fertilization is another bad winter gardening habit. After a fertilizer application, plants will spurt new growth that will be frost tender, especially if you use a fast release fertilizer. And, plants susceptible to frost bite will suffer the greatest damage during a fertilizer induced growth spurt. Three times a year with a slow release fertilizer is plenty of fertilizer for most plants. Use the "holiday rule" to remember when to fertilize: Valentine's Day, Memorial Day & Labor Day. Deciduous trees can be fertilized in winter with a high phosphorus and potassium with medium nitrogen fertilizer. Winter flowers may also need an extra dose of fertilizer. If you notice that your flowers aren't thriving, they probably just need a dose of fertilizer...not more water. Use the screwdriver test to be sure. Over watering winter flowers can cause root rot on pansies and mildew and rust on snapdragons. A plant that looks yellowish may have aphids, stress from over watering, or a lack of fertilizer. If there are no bugs, and the soil is wet, then it's safe to say the problem is fertilization. Flower Power is a great balanced boost for winter flowers.

Gardening Tips:
Don't forget your indoor 'garden'! Your houseplants, like their outdoor relatives, will not need to be watered as much in the winter. Larger pots will not need as much water as smaller ones. The top of the soil doesn't reveal much about what's going on down around the roots. The best way to tell is to: become familiar with the particular species & it's needs & use a moisture meter-only $14.98.Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Feature Plant
Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima)
Until the 1990's, the Ecke family of Encinitas, CA had a virtual monopoly on poinsettias owing to a technological secret that made it difficult for others to compete. The key to producing more desirable poinsettias is to create a fuller, more compact plant. A poinsettia left to grow on it's own will naturally take an open, somewhat weedy look. The Ecke's technique, which involved grafting two varietietechnique, but it was Paul Ecke, Jr. that was really responsible for cultivating the association between the plant & the winter holidays. Besides changing the market s together, made it possible to get every seedling to branch, resulting in a bushier plant. Albert Ecke emigrated from Germany to LA in 1900, opening a dairy & orchard in the Eagle Rock area. He became intrigued by the plant & sold them from street stands. His son, Paul Ecke developed the grafting from mature plants shipped by rail to cuttings sent by air, he sent free plants to television stations like The Tonight Show & Bob Hope's Christmas specials to market the plants. However, in the 1990's, a university researcher discovered the method & published it, opening the door for competitors to flourish. The Ecke family, now led by Paul Ecke III, no longer grows any on farms in the US, but as of 2008, they still control about 70% of the domestic & 50% of the worldwide market. Here I've chosen to highlight 3 more varieties that we're growing for the Festival.

Gardening Tips:
Seeing something weird on your Queen Palm? This picture was sent in for analysis. The little white growths seen here are actually berries. The best thing to do is cut off the bloom stalk and the husk that is around it as well as the berries that turn into seed and make a mess that drops.

Green Tip:
Buy local & save the freight!

A species of flowering plant indigenous to Mexico and Guatemala. The name "poinsettia" is after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1828. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, the plant is called Cuetlaxochitl meaning "skin flower." The Aztecs used the plant to produce red dye and as an antipyretic medication. Today it is known in Mexico and Guatemala as "Noche Buena" or Christmas' Eve. In Spain its is known as "Flor de Pascua" or Easter Flower in English. In both Chile and Peru, the plant became known as "Crown of the Andes". The plants' association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. Here I've chosen to highlight 3 of the varieties that we're growing for the Festival.
Freedom Red, Freedom White, Winter Rose
In next week's email, I'll focus on some of the other varieties.

Gardening Tips:
For germinating seeds, use a fine ground mulch instead of manure. Manure is generally too 'hot' & can burn seeds. Manure is high in nitrogen, but low in Phosphate & Potassium--the two nutrients that are essential for good root establishment. Strong roots mean strong plants. Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Don't bag up those autumn leaves, add them to your compost pile!

Feature Tree: Rubber Tree(Ficus elastica 'Decora')
Native from northeast India south to Indonesia, it can become very large in its native habitat - up to 100' with a 6.5' dia. trunk. In the landscape, however, 25-40' would be more realistic. They do best in Phoenix on the east side of a structure. It is evergreen & drought tolerant, but can suffer breakage during high winds. Available in 1, 5, & 15 gal. sizes.

Feature Vine: Lady Bank's Rose(Rosa banksiae)

Native to central & western China, it is a scrambling vine growing vigorously over other shrubs to 20' tall. Unlike most roses, it is practically thornless, although the white variety may bear some prickles particularly on the stout, strong shoots. It can tolerate full sun & is one of the few vines that can survive on a west facing wall. It is named after Lady Banks, wife of the eminent botanist Sir Joseph Banks. The world's largest rosebush was planted in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1885 and still flourishes today in the city's sunny climate. This rose bush now covers 8,000 sq. ft. of the roof on an inn, and has a 12' circumference trunk.Available in 1 & 5 gal.

Feature Flower: Lobelia(Lobelia erinus)

Low growing annual with brilliant blue flowers that is usually used as borders in beds & hanging baskets. Can take partial to full sun. Originating in S. Africa, it is found in tropical to warm temperate regions. Native Americans used lobelia to treat respiratory and muscle disorders, and as a purgative. Today it is used to treat asthma and food poisoning, and is often used as part of smoking cessation programs. Extracts of Lobelia inflata (Indian Tobacco) contain lobeline, which showed positive effects in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tumor cells. Available in 6-packs.

Another satisfied Gardener's Eden customer & testimonial.

Call 602-437-2233 today for your free landscaping estimate!
We wanted to take a minute to send you a note regarding our front yard project that you completed for us in October. The project turned out beautifully and the plants are filling in nicely. When people have asked us about working with your team - there are several things we always tell them - (1) Your designer really understood what we were trying to achieve with our "tudor style" house. She spent time with us, listened to the feeling that we were trying to create in our yard and stayed in constant communication. She spent a lot of time (and it was hot!) making sure her design captured the feeling - we couldn't be more pleased with the attention to detail. She also made sure that some of our favorite iris and spurias were "re-cycled" to new, more appropriate locations. (2) Gary was so giving of his time - he also listened to what we were trying to accomplish and made wonderful plant recommendations. An example is the choice of the Bradford Pear which brings the beautiful deep fall red and white spring blooms. The basic maintenance class taught us a lot that has helped our entire yard thrive. (3) Ben and the crew were professional, took the time to answer many questions, were respectful of our neighbors throughout the process and did a fantastic job of installing all the hardscape, lighting and plants. They were also great about keeping the site tidy, making suggestions (the new mailbox!) and understanding of the "tweaks" we made along the way to get it just right. We truly appreciated that you had access to artists who contributed to our project to make it unique. The arbor in our yard is truly a work of art. We wish all of you a fantastic year and look forward to taking more classes! All the best - Pam and Keith

Gardening Tips:
Watch for caterpillars on passion vine. The Western Fritillary butterfly lays its eggs exclusively on passion vines. The resulting spiny caterpillars can decimate the leaves quickly. They can be removed by hand or you can use Spinosad-an organic caterpillar/worm killer. Butterflies are pretty, but their offspring are quite destructive!

Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Save some seeds from your harvest to ensure crops for next season. Be sure to completely dry the seeds for storage & store them in airtight containers out of direct light. We do carry seeds at our retail center & be sure to get our seed planting chart to know when to plant.

We will be taking pre-orders for onion starts, roses, bulbs, citrus & deciduous fruit trees, ladybugs & mantises! Watch for a special email with all the details!

Feature Tree Mastic Tree(Pistacia lentiscus)
An evergreen shrub or small tree of the Pistacio family growing up to 13' tall which is cultivated for its aromatic resin, mainly on the Greek island of Chios. It is native throughout the Mediterranean region. Mastic resin is a relatively expensive kind of spice, that has been used, principally, as a chewing gum, for at least 2,400 years. It does well in our climate & is low water use. Available in 15 gallon & 24" box sizes.

Feature Vine Asiatic Jasmine(Trachelospermum asiaticum)
Evergreen trailing vine with dark green 1" - 2" leaves. Insignificant, white, fragrant flowers. Recommended as a ground cover for shade, must be forced to climb. Prefers regular watering and rich loamy soil. Prune in spring to maintain neat appearance. Blooms best when climbing; prostrate blooms very little if at all. Available in 1 gallon size.

Feature Flower Petunia(Petunia x hybrida)
Widely cultivated plant of South American origin. It was first sent to Paris from South America in 1823. They belong to the same family as tomatoes & potatoes. They are sun lovers & won't bloom as well in shady locations. The varieties for fall & winter grow more upright than do the 'wave' varieties grown in spring & summer. For the best look, they need to be routinely deadheaded. Available in 6-packs & 4" pots.

Herb, Vegetables & Flowers class Repeat

Gary Petterson keeps the gardening class entertaining. Last Saturday was FULL! Join us for a repeat of the Herb, Vegetables & Flowers class this Saturday at 10 AM.

There won't be a repeat of the Iris class.
Iris rhizome class and sale at Gardener's World was a great success.

This is the perfect time to plant irises for beautiful blooms next spring and for years to come. We will continue to sell rhizomes at Gardener's World, as well as the Sun Country Iris Sales at the following locations:

October 17
9am-2pm
Baker Nursery 9am-2pm
3414 N. 40th St.
Phoenix, AZ 85018

October 24
8am-2pm
Metro Tech High School
1900 W. Thomas Rd.
Phoenix, AZ 85015

Some of the iris rhizomes on sale are from the Petterson gardens. These were sent to them to grow for two years and were on the Southwest Region Iris Trek (convention) last spring. These are the latest from the iris hybridizers and sell in catalogues for $40 - $60. These were just dug and are on sale by the Sun Country Iris Society at Gardeners World and at the other sales locations for only $5 each or 3 for $12. Other iris varieties are $4 each or 3 for $10. This is a great bargain!

Gardening Tips:
As temps start to cool, remember to adjust your irrigation timers so you won't be over watering. Refer to our watering guide on our website for more information.

Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
If watering with gray water, be sure to acidify with First Step Soil Acidifier. Gray water is even more alkaline & saline than our regular water, & can be devastating to even very mature plants & trees.

Feature Tree: Mulga (Acacia aneura)
Native to Australia, the term Mulga is an aboriginal term for 'shields', which were commonly made from the extremely hard wood of this species. Their growth is highly variable in form & height. In their native habitat, if undisturbed by fire, they can live to be 200-300 years old. They grow slowly to a maximum size of 15' high by 10' wide. Available in 15 G & 24" box sizes.

Feature Vine: Creeping Fig (Ficus pumila aka Ficus repens)
A woody, evergreen, self-climbing vine that is native to East Asia. As the common name suggests, it has a creeping habit and can cover large areas (15-20') of structures if not controlled. It is hardy and fast growing and requires little in the way of care, but can't take full sun. This plant requires the fig wasp Blastophaga pamila for pollination. Available in 1G & 5G sizes.

Feature Flower: Geranium (Pelargonium spp.)
It is found throughout the temperate regions of the world and the mountains of the tropics, but mostly in the eastern part of the Mediterranean region. In Phoenix, they do best in morning sun or filtered light. They should not be watered to heavily & should be fed with Flower Power once every 60 days. Available in 4" pots.

Fall is for Planting!

Planting for fall veggies, flowers & rye* will be more successful with proper soil preparation. Use First Step Soil Acidifier to help 'soften' the soil. 14-14-14 (Flower Power) is a once every 4 months slow release fertilizer that's ideal for flowers & veggies anytime of year. Greenworld Mulch is important for giving body to the soil & helping hold moisture in.*Also, if planting veggie, flower or rye seed, you should wait until around Oct. 10th or when daytime temps are going to stay under 100 degrees & nighttime temps are under 60 degrees.

With the coming cool weather, we tend to forget about the pests that plague our gardens in the warmer seasons. During cool weather, many insects overwinter, such as caterpillars who will continue munching until it's time to go into cocoon mode. Pest control should be continued even in the winter. Just because you don't see them, doesn't mean they aren't there. A product, such as Bayer Complete Lawn Insect Killer, takes care of bugs above & below ground for 3 months.Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Plants in your yard you don't want? Try donating them to churches, shelters, or charitable organization. Nurseries sometimes take them, but may not due to the uncertainty of how they've been grown & the possibility of introducing pathogens into an existing plant population.

Irises
Iris rhizomes are dug to divide large clumps for replanting. Tall bearded irises are often divided every 3 - 4 years depending on the size of the
clump. Optimum time for digging is September in the Valley of the Sun. Then they can be replanted soon afterward. We prefer to plant in October when the weather has started to cool. Carefully dig deep under the clump to avoid damaging rhizomes. The original mother rhizome is in the middle and the increases grow out from the mother.
To plant, choose a location that has 8 hours of full sun for maximum bloom. Dig soil to a depth of 10 - 12 inches. Acidify with First Step to a pH level of 6.5 to 7.3. Mulch that is formulated and inoculated microbially and composted that has low manure content works best in Arizona soil conditions. Another key factor for good soil is the microbial content. Great Big Plants enhances the microbial content of the soil. Great Big
Plants is organic and contains 17 different microbes, many of which feed on detrimental fungus such as pythium, rhizoctonia and phytophora. You will also notice an increase in the number of worms in the soil because microbes feed on organic matter that contains microbes. The iris handbook recommends aluminum sulfate, but it shouldn't be used in Arizona soil because it can retard or mutate irises.

Native to Australia, it's featured in the song 'Waltzing Matilda'. It's a bushy tree that can reach 18'-60' high & 20'-30' wide. It's blue-green leaves resemble 8" ribbons & it blooms small white flowers. Its distinguishing, tiny seed capsules grow in small clusters and are no larger than a match head. These trees are drought tolerant and do not suffer from wind breakage. The foliage of nearly all species has a strong pungent odor similar to menthol. Well-drained soil is preferable. Available in 15G & 24" box sizes.

Virginia Creeper is a woody vine native to the U.S. that's often mistaken for Poison Ivy. The leaves are alternate with each leaf palmately divided (arranged in a radial pattern like fingers from a palm) with 5 leaflets that are generally long & toothed (poison ivy has 3 leaflets). Can cover 50' x 50' area if not controlled. Rarely blooms, but can have inconspicuous green blooms that become bluish globular berries in winter that birds like to eat, but are harmful to humans. Changes to beautiful autumnal colors when the weather cools. Available in 1G & 5G sizes.
