Gardening Tips:
For germinating seeds, use a fine ground mulch instead of manure. Manure is generally too 'hot' & can burn seeds. Manure is high in nitrogen, but low in Phosphate & Potassium--the two nutrients that are essential for good root establishment. Strong roots mean strong plants. Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Don't bag up those autumn leaves, add them to your compost pile!

Feature Tree: Rubber Tree(Ficus elastica 'Decora')
Native from northeast India south to Indonesia, it can become very large in its native habitat - up to 100' with a 6.5' dia. trunk. In the landscape, however, 25-40' would be more realistic. They do best in Phoenix on the east side of a structure. It is evergreen & drought tolerant, but can suffer breakage during high winds. Available in 1, 5, & 15 gal. sizes.

Feature Vine: Lady Bank's Rose(Rosa banksiae)

Native to central & western China, it is a scrambling vine growing vigorously over other shrubs to 20' tall. Unlike most roses, it is practically thornless, although the white variety may bear some prickles particularly on the stout, strong shoots. It can tolerate full sun & is one of the few vines that can survive on a west facing wall. It is named after Lady Banks, wife of the eminent botanist Sir Joseph Banks. The world's largest rosebush was planted in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1885 and still flourishes today in the city's sunny climate. This rose bush now covers 8,000 sq. ft. of the roof on an inn, and has a 12' circumference trunk.Available in 1 & 5 gal.

Feature Flower: Lobelia(Lobelia erinus)

Low growing annual with brilliant blue flowers that is usually used as borders in beds & hanging baskets. Can take partial to full sun. Originating in S. Africa, it is found in tropical to warm temperate regions. Native Americans used lobelia to treat respiratory and muscle disorders, and as a purgative. Today it is used to treat asthma and food poisoning, and is often used as part of smoking cessation programs. Extracts of Lobelia inflata (Indian Tobacco) contain lobeline, which showed positive effects in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tumor cells. Available in 6-packs.
