We wanted to take a minute to send you a note regarding our front yard project that you completed for us in October. The project turned out beautifully and the plants are filling in nicely. When people have asked us about working with your team - there are several things we always tell them - (1) Your designer really understood what we were trying to achieve with our "tudor style" house. She spent time with us, listened to the feeling that we were trying to create in our yard and stayed in constant communication. She spent a lot of time (and it was hot!) making sure her design captured the feeling - we couldn't be more pleased with the attention to detail. She also made sure that some of our favorite iris and spurias were "re-cycled" to new, more appropriate locations. (2) Gary was so giving of his time - he also listened to what we were trying to accomplish and made wonderful plant recommendations. An example is the choice of the Bradford Pear which brings the beautiful deep fall red and white spring blooms. The basic maintenance class taught us a lot that has helped our entire yard thrive. (3) Ben and the crew were professional, took the time to answer many questions, were respectful of our neighbors throughout the process and did a fantastic job of installing all the hardscape, lighting and plants. They were also great about keeping the site tidy, making suggestions (the new mailbox!) and understanding of the "tweaks" we made along the way to get it just right. We truly appreciated that you had access to artists who contributed to our project to make it unique. The arbor in our yard is truly a work of art. We wish all of you a fantastic year and look forward to taking more classes! All the best - Pam and Keith

Gardening Tips:
Watch for caterpillars on passion vine. The Western Fritillary butterfly lays its eggs exclusively on passion vines. The resulting spiny caterpillars can decimate the leaves quickly. They can be removed by hand or you can use Spinosad-an organic caterpillar/worm killer. Butterflies are pretty, but their offspring are quite destructive!

Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Save some seeds from your harvest to ensure crops for next season. Be sure to completely dry the seeds for storage & store them in airtight containers out of direct light. We do carry seeds at our retail center & be sure to get our seed planting chart to know when to plant.

We will be taking pre-orders for onion starts, roses, bulbs, citrus & deciduous fruit trees, ladybugs & mantises! Watch for a special email with all the details!

Feature Tree Mastic Tree(Pistacia lentiscus)
An evergreen shrub or small tree of the Pistacio family growing up to 13' tall which is cultivated for its aromatic resin, mainly on the Greek island of Chios. It is native throughout the Mediterranean region. Mastic resin is a relatively expensive kind of spice, that has been used, principally, as a chewing gum, for at least 2,400 years. It does well in our climate & is low water use. Available in 15 gallon & 24" box sizes.

Feature Vine Asiatic Jasmine(Trachelospermum asiaticum)
Evergreen trailing vine with dark green 1" - 2" leaves. Insignificant, white, fragrant flowers. Recommended as a ground cover for shade, must be forced to climb. Prefers regular watering and rich loamy soil. Prune in spring to maintain neat appearance. Blooms best when climbing; prostrate blooms very little if at all. Available in 1 gallon size.

Feature Flower Petunia(Petunia x hybrida)
Widely cultivated plant of South American origin. It was first sent to Paris from South America in 1823. They belong to the same family as tomatoes & potatoes. They are sun lovers & won't bloom as well in shady locations. The varieties for fall & winter grow more upright than do the 'wave' varieties grown in spring & summer. For the best look, they need to be routinely deadheaded. Available in 6-packs & 4" pots.
