Weekly Gardening & Green Tip:
Planting rows of tall shrubs or small trees can provide a wind break. Hot winds can be even more damaging to your landscape than the heat of summer alone. The effect is like that of a blow dryer on your plants. Most of the afternoon wind in the Phoenix area is from the west, so that would be a good place for a living wall. Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Don't kill those weeds--eat 'em!! Several species of so-called weeds are actually edible. Examples include: purslane, dandelion, amaranth, storksbill, shepherd's purse & others. Make sure you haven't already sprayed them with weed killer & that they are thoroughly washed.

Feature Tree: Palo Blanco (Acacia willardiana)

A slender graceful upright deciduous/evergreen tree with sparse foliage up to 15 - 20' tall, 10 to 15' spread; peeling outer bark reveals the white inner bark; very small leaves at the end of elongated petioles. The common name translates into "White Stick", describing its unique peeling white bark. It is native to the rocky hillsides in Sonora Mexico. Its leaves are made up of a thin 4" midrib that divides to form two leaflets about 1 - 3" long. Each leaflet then bears ten tiny leaflets. The canopy is almost transparent providing only the very modest of shade. It has white to cream colored, catkin type flowers appearing in the spring. Slow growing & low water use. Available in 15G & 24" box.

Feature Plant: Monk's Pepper (Vitex rotundifolia)

Indigenous to Hawaii, it is a sprawling shrub 6 to 8' in diameter and 6" to 2' tall, but can reach 4' in height and 12' in width in protected areas. The round leaves are gray-green to silvery and 1 to 2" long. The foliage has a spicy fragrance. The 1" flowers are bluish purple and are produced in small clusters at the ends of the branches which become 1/4" round bluish black seeds. Drought & salt tolerant. Although it can be invasive if planted in coastal areas, here it becomes deciduo
us in the winter. Available in 1G.
It's on our sale!

Feature Plant: Purple Heart (Setcreasea pallida)

A native of Mexico, it's named for the striking purple color of the
plant in full sun or light shade. The lance shaped leaves will reach 7" long by 1" wide and are covered with pale hairs. The fleshy stems are first erect, later lying on the ground as a creeping herb, around 16" long. They make an attractive basket subject and can be used as a ground cover.Blooming in mid-summer to early fall, the 1/2" pale pink flowers bloom at the ends of major stems. Available in 1G.

Dig this! Iris

The Sun Country Iris Society (SCIS) has completed digging iris rhizomes from 3 or the 4 gardens that were on the Southwest Region 2009 Trek in April. These rhizomes are now being sent to other iris societies in the region as well as being offered to our members at Iris Auction at our meetings. They will also be sold at a number of public sales throughout the fall.

Digging & preparing:
Iris rhizomes are dug to divide large clumps for replanting. Tall bearded irises are often divided every 3 – 4 years depending on the size of the clump. Optimum time for digging is September in the Valley of the Sun. Then they can be replanted soon afterwards. We prefer to plant in October when weather has started to cool. Carefully dig deep under the clump to avoid damaging rhizomes. The original mother rhizome is in the middle and the increases grow out from the mother. The SCIS recommends throwing the mother rhizome and any bloom stalks (heavy stalks that had blooms). Trim the roots off to about a fistful of roots. Trim the top of the leaves (fans) to a V at the top to the fans. In the Valley we usually trim the roots very close before planting.

Digging tall bearded irises:
*
*

*
1. Carefully dig deep under the entire clump.
*
*
*
*

2. Notice the clump grows out from the original mother rhizome.
*
*
*
*

*
*
*
*

*
3. Separate the soil from the roots of the rhizomes
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*

*
Prepare beds for planting:
Choose a location that has 8 hours of full sun for maximum bloom. Dig soil to a depth of 10 – 12 inches.

Soil:
According to the basic iris handbook, the recommendation of pH is 6.1 to 7.2. As a soil chemist I think it is realistic to have a target of 6.5 to 7.3 for pH. Manures as recommended could be a problem. Desert produced manures contain high soluble salts so I like to stay away from that source of organics. They usually contain weed seeds and are not usually composted enough. Mulch that is formulated and inoculated microbially and composted that has low manure content works the best in Arizona soil conditions.
PH adjustment is necessary for most Arizona soils. Typical soil tests show a pH of 7.8 to 9.0 and above. A soil test is the most accurate method to determine the nutrients and soil amendments needed. The soil test I run comes with a prescription for the correct amount of amendments and fertilizer to correct problems. This usually saves money on cost of fertilizers. To adjust the pH use First Step Soil acidifier from Gardener’s World (more info at http://www.gardenpro.net/ information #1 handout)
Another key factor for good soil is the microbial content. Great Big Plants enhances the microbial content of the soil. Great Big plants is organic and contains 17 different microbes, many of which feed on detrimental fungus such as pythium, rhizoctonia and phytophora. You will also notice an increase in the number of worms in the soil because microbes feed on organic matter that contains microbes.
The handbook recommends aluminum sulfate. That should not be used in Arizona soils because it can cause retardation or mutations on iris.

Planting:
Will be covered in October newsletter, as temperatures are more conducive in the Valley of the Sun.

Weekly Gardening & Green Tip:
Plant drought tolerant trees & shrubs now so their roots can become well established over the fall. Low water use plants will use even less water over the winter! Getting plants established over the fall & winter will help them be better able to survive the following summer.Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample (or email us a photo) for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Plant a tree to shade your windows & cut down on your air conditioning costs!

Feature Tree: Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis)

A dense shade tree, native to China & the Phillipines. It grows at a moderate rate to 40' x 35'. There are both male & female trees. The leaves change color in the fall to a brilliant red-orange, before dropping for the winter.
Available in 15G, 24" & 36" Box

Feature Plant: Asparagus Fern
(Asparagus sprengerii [L] & meyeri [R])
~
A native of South Africa is not really a fern at all. Even though it may appear fern-like to the inexperienced eye, it has flowers and berries, so is clearly a highly modified angiosperm. The needle-like leaves are actually short branches called cladodes. The true leaves are initially green, but remain on the plant as inconspicuous dry scales. The plant will reach from 2 ' to 4 ' tall. It prefers full sun to part shade. The A. meyeri does better in shade. Taller stems will weep and make the plant a good basket subject. Available in 1G & 5G.

Feature Plant: Mexican Petunia (Ruellia spp.)
Native to Mexico & the southwestern US, this evergreen shrub averages about 3' x 3', except for the 'Katie' variety which is a dwarf (1' x 2'). It can spread through seed & by the stems bending to touch & root into the ground. The flowers are usually purple, but can be pink or white. It's a moderate water user & can tolerate full sun to part shade. On our Sale! Available in 1G & 5G.

Weekly Gardening & Green Tip:
Shade Cloth-One of the best ways to help your plants survive the 'dog days' is to cover them with shade cloth. We have aluminized shade cloth that can be cut to your specific dimensions. Gary Petterson (L) and team at Gardener's World show the aluminized shade cloth that gives the best protection from hot sun. Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to bring a sample in to verify it with our Garden Pros.

Green Tip:
If your emitters are clogged with mineral deposits, try soaking them in white vinegar. This will dissolve the build-up & make them work more efficiently.

Feature Tree: Indian Laurel Fig (Ficus nitida)

Native from Malaysia to Borneo, the Indian Laurel Fig is a fast growing, evergreen shade tree. Deep watering is essential to keeping this tree's roots moving downward instead of outward. They're maximum dimensions are 30-60' high x 30' wide. Pictured here is the big Ficus at the front of our nursery. It is somewhat messy because of the small inedible figs that drop, but it's probably the best shade tree for our area.
Available in 15G & 24" & 36' box. On our sale!

Feature Shrub: Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa)

This deep green shrub is native to S. Africa. It can tolerate full sun to light shade & can reach 2-7' x 7-10', depending on the variety. It produces 5-petaled white flowers that give way to plum-like fruits that are edible (the rest of the plant is poisonous). Stems are generally thorny with forked spines.
Available in 1, 5 & 15 gallon sizes. On our sale!

Feature Plant: Rain Lily (Zephyranthes spp.)
.
Rain lilies, so named because of their tendency to burst into bloom after a rain, are originally from Mexico, Guatemala and the grassy plains of South America. These clump-forming perennials start small, but when left in undisturbed will develop over several seasons into truly impressive sights. They need shade & would do well under trees where grass has difficulty growing. They come in white, pink & yellow.
Available in 1 & 3 gallon sizes. On our sale!

Weekly Gardening & Landscape Tip:
Heat Stress-What is plant heat stress, how do you know your plant is stressed, and what do you do when your plants have been affected? Plants are just like people when it comes to heat stress; they have to have a certain amount of water to keep the system operating. During times of intense heat, evapotranspiration is accelerated. Evapotranspiration is the amount of water a plant takes up through the roots and releases through the underside of the leaf along with oxygen. Plants in distress show wilt, the leaves may look brownish and crisp around the edges, the plant may begin dropping leaves to shut down the evapotranspiration, branches will begin to die back, blooming stops and they pre-maturely drop the blossoms. When observing your plants, look at them in the morning, before the intense heat sets in. Even if well-watered, they may wilt in the middle of the day, but it doesn't necessarily mean they need water. More plants die from over watering than under watering. There are several steps you can take to keep your plants healthy during our intense summer heat: deep watering (see our watering guide on our website), soil acidification, mulching, and use of stress relief amendments such as Perk or 'Great Big Plants'. Also, shade cloth can be used to protect plants from the burning rays of the sun. The object is to keep the plant healthy, watered and the root zone as cool as possible.
Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure & verify it with our Garden Pros.

Green Tip:
Got worms? Earthworms aren't just bait, they're your garden's best friend! Worms tunnel deeply in the soil and bring the subsoil closer to the surface mixing it with the topsoil. Slime, a secretion of earthworms, contains nitrogen. Nitrogen is an important nutrient for plants. The sticky slime helps to hold clusters of soil particles together in formations called aggregates. Maintaining a healthy population of worms is easy. Just use common sense and see that they have a moist, well-mulched habitat with plenty of decaying matter. Take care when turning the compost pile. A pile interior might contain dozens of worms, so try to relocate them to an area where they will have a good chance in which to burrow deeply. Worms are resilient, have a high reproduction rate, and can survive without us. But with just a little help they can be made to flourish. And you can forget about ever needing a rototiller

Feature Tree:
Sweet Acacia (Acacia smallii)
Native from the southern US to S. America, this is a fast growing evergreen tree, whose maximum dimensions are 20' x 20'. It has moderate litter, is thorny & a moderate water user. The sweet scent of its gold flowers is as common as the scent of orange blossoms in the spring.

Available in 15G & 24" & 36' box.

Feature Shrub:
Aretmisia 'Powis Castle'
(Artemisia arborescens x absinthium)
Powis Castle artemisia is an evergreen (actually "eversilver") perennial with woody stems. It also can be classified as a shrub or sub-shrub. This is a beautiful silver-gray plant that grows in a dense, billowing mound up to 2-3' x 3-6' in diameter. The leaves are finely dissected like filigreed silver lacework. Powis Castle rarely flowers, but some plants may occasionally produce 6" panicles of silver, yellow-tinged flower heads. This artemisia has a more compact habit and is less leggy and sprawling than others.

Available in 1 & 5 gallon sizes.

Feature Plant:

Lily Turf (Liriope muscari)
Liriope, also commonly called 'border grass' is not actually a grass but a member of the lily family, a fact that inspires another of its common names, lilyturf. The dark green, ribbonlike foliage grows in length from 10-18" & then recurves toward the ground to form rounded clumps. As the clumps mature they merge into a continuous carpet that resembles a plot of shaggy lawn grass. In summer, spikes of small purple, violet or white flowers rise from the center of clumps. Flowers are followed by pea-sized black or white berries in autumn. Liriope spreads quite fast in reasonable soil, creating a substantial tuberous root mass. It grows best in morning sun/afternoon shade or filtered light. Moderate water user.

Available in 1 & 5 gallon sizes.

Weekly Gardening & Landscape Tip:
Iron Chlorosis-Iron deficiency occurs on the new growth, toward the tips. Nitrogen occurs from the bottom of the plant on the old growth. The symptoms of iron deficiency, also known as iron chlorosis, appear in the leaves as green veins and yellow leaf tissue. If the deficiency is severe, the entire leaf may become yellow. Iron chlorosis is found where soils are highly alkaline. The high pH of the soil ties up the iron in the soil, making it unavailable to the plants. Iron is required for the formation of chlorophyll in plant cells and serves as an activator for respiration and photosynthesis. High soil temperatures and high light intensity can also increase problems with iron chlorosis.Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure & verify it with our Garden Pros.
See the bottom of post for 30% off on chelated iron. Chelated iron can be used with First Step Soil Acidifier--lowering the pH will make the iron more available.

Green Tip:
Petition your town for free compost bins for homeowners. The city of Gilbert has done this for their residents. The richest soil additive comes from recycling your scraps.

Feature Tree:
Willow Acacia (Acacia salicina)

Native to Australia, this is a fast growing evergreen tree, whose maximum dimensions are 30' x 15'. It has low litter, is thornless & a low water user. It can be utilized as a suitable screen for narrow areas.

Available in 15G & 24" box.

Feature Plant:
Carribean Agave(Agave angustifolia marginata)

One of the smaller agaves (2-3') that comes from the West Indies. It's used to make Mezcal. It, like almost all agaves, will put up a flower spike & then die. However, the mother plant will have left behind plenty of offspring to carry on.

Available in 1, 5 & 15 gallon sizes.

Feature Flower:
Summer Snaps (Angelonia angustifolia)

Summer annual that has salvia-like flower spires that reach 1-2' x 1-2'.They're studded with fascinating snapdragon-like flowers with beautiful colorations in purple, white, or pink. It's the perfect plant for adding bright color to hot, sunny spaces. This tough plant blooms all summer long with moderate water.
