Green Tip:
Provide a pesticide-free sanctuary for our pollinator pals, such as butterflies and bees, by growing a diverse variety of native &/or acclimatized flowering plants (such as sage, lantana, globe mallow & many others) they're particularly drawn to. (Gardens with 10 or more species of attractive plants have been found to entice the most bees.) If you haven't already heard, we're in the throes of a major bee-loss epidemic, which is causing beekeepers in North America and Europe much hand-wringing. Because pollinators affect 35% of the world's crop production-and increase the output of 87% of the leading food crops worldwide-extending a little hometown hospitality could go a long way.

Feature Tree: Italian & Arizona Cypress
(Cupressus sempervirens & arizonica)The Italian cypress is a medium-sized evergreen tree to 40-60' tall, with a 10' spread. It is very long-lived, with some trees reported to be over 1,000 years old. It is drought & poor soil tolerant. Native to the eastern Mediterranean region. According to Ovid, the tree was named after Kyparissos, who after accidentally killing Apollo's beloved stag, became so remorseful that he besought the gods to punish him with everlasting gloom. In compliance they transformed him into a cypress tree. The Arizona cypress is a native southwestern cypress that reaches 30-40' high & 15-20' wide. It has pale gray-green to blue-green foliage & is also drought & poor soil tolerant. Arizona cypress available in 15G & 24BX. Italian cypress available in 5G.

Feature Plant: Euonymus(Euonymus colorata & 'Gold Spot')
Slow growing evergreen shrub, with an upright habit. Prefers shade. Averages 1-3' high by 2' wide. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and oval to round 1 to 2 1/2 inches long. The 'Gold Spot' variety has leaf centers that are golden yellow. Watch for scale, thrips, or spider mites. Available in 1, 5G sizes.

Feature Plant: Bower Vine (Pandorea jasminoides)
Originating in Australia & New Zealand , it can grow up to 20' if trellised, but can root from nodes which touch the ground. It grows best in partial sun. It blooms from April-October in Phoenix. It requires moderate water. Available in 1 & 5G sizes.

Feature Tree: Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii)
Named after the noted Scottish botanist William Roxburgh, it's native to the Himalayas at around the 7000' elevation. It's range extends from northern Pakistan across northern India and Nepal to Bhutan. It's closely related to the Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis). It is heat & drought tolerant & can reach 60-100' tall. Available in 15G & 24" box.


Feature Plant: Oleander (Nerium oleander)
It is native to a broad area from Morocco and Portugal eastward through the Mediterranean region and southern Asia to Yunnan in southern parts of China. It typically occurs around dry stream beds. It grows to a maximum height of 12' tall for the standard variety & 4-5' tall for the dwarf variety. Oleander grows well in warm subtropical regions, where it is extensively used as an ornamental plant in landscapes, parks, and along roadsides. It is drought tolerant and will tolerate occasional light frost. All parts of the plant are toxic & should not be consumed. Available in 1, 5, 15G & 24" box sizes.

Feature Plant: Pink Trumpet Vine (Podranea ricasoliana)
Originating in South Africa (Eastern Cape coast), it can grow up to 20' if trellised. It can grow in full sun but care should be taken to avoid reflected light & heat. It requires little to moderate water. Podranea is an anagram for the closely related genus Pandorea. Available in 1 & 5G sizes.

Gardening Tips:
September Gardening Calendar. Check Water Management Tips for our watering guide! Note: all watering recommendations are for drip & TTape irrigation systems at a rate of 1 gallon/hour.

Lawns & Grasses:
Water every 3 days for 10-20 minutes (on sprinkler system).
Apply First Step soil acidifier.
Don't spread winter rye seed until the daytime temperatures are below 90°-95° & nighttime temperatures are below 60°.

Fruit:
Fertilize grape vines. Acidify fruit & citrus trees with First Step.

Vegetables & Herbs:
Plant arugula, beets, broccoli, Brussels' sprouts, cabbage, carrots, collards, lettace, mixed greens, onions, peas & spinach.
Set out transplants of tomatoes & peppers.
Plant anise, cilantro, dill, fennel, lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme & parsley. Acidify with First Step Soil Acidifier & use 6-20-20 pre-plant fertilizer.
Add mulch to beds.
Water vegetables & herbs twice a week for 2-3 hours (on drip system).

Annuals:
Plant annuals for fall color, e.g. dianthus, geranium, lobelia, petunia, snapdragon, alyssum & calendula.
Mulch flowerbeds well & add a 6-20-20 pre-plant fertilizer. Acidify with First Step Soil Acidifier
Water to a depth of 6-8".

Perennials:
Plant lantana, gazania, bougainvillia, ice plants, etc.
Divide perennials such as iris, daylily & fortnight lily.
Acidify with First Step & fertilize with 14-14-14 slow release fertilizer.

Roses:
Continue to deadhead spent blooms.
Acidify with First Step & fertilize with Magnum Grow fertilizer.

Shrubs & Trees:
Water shrubs weekly to a depth of 2 feet.
Acidify with First Step & lightly fertilize with 18-5-10 slow-release fertilizer.

Maintenance:
Spray unwanted grasses with Com-Pleet herbicide. Control nutgrass with Sedgehammer. Keep weeds continuously under control with Concern, Amaze or Weedstopper.

Want to get a work out while cutting the grass? Reel lawn mowers are an eco-friendly alternative to gas-powered rotary models and a true boon to energy conservation. Reel lawn mowers are muscle-powered, so there's no engine involved. Using them not only promotes energy conservation but also clean air.

Feature Tree: Kurrajong Bottle Tree (Brachychiton populneus)
Indigenous to Australia, it can reach up to 40' x 30'. It takes little water once established. It can be sensitive to Texas Root Rot. Bell shaped cream flowers, spotted on the inside, are produced in masses in the late spring. They are followed by brown pods containing seeds that are covered with stiff hairs that penetrate the skin like glochids (the prickly pear's small spines). They should be handled with caution. Available in 15G & 24" BX.

Feature Plant: Lantana(Lantana spp.)
A genus of about 150 species of perennial flowering plants, native to tropical regions of the Americas, Africa and existing as an imported plant in numerous areas. The aromatic flower clusters (called umbels) are a mix of red, orange, yellow, or blue and white florets. Other colors exist as new varieties are being selected. The flowers typically change color as they mature, resulting in inflorescences that are two or three colored. The shrub forms are L. camara, whereas the trailing varieties are L. montevidensis. They are low water use & hardy, but are frost sensitive & should be covered with Frost Blanket in winter. Available in 1 & 5G. On sale-30% off regular retail!!

Feature Plant: Fortnight Lily (Dietes bicolor)
A clump-forming rhizomatous perennial with long sword-like pale-green leaves, growing from multiple fans at the base of the clump. This species belongs to the Iris family. It can form large clumps if left undisturbed for years. This species is common in horticulture in its native South Africa. The blooms are yellow with three dark purple spots, each surrounded by an orange outline, and are followed by a capsule that may bend the flower stalks to the ground. Ripe seeds (dark brown in color) are dispersed when the capsule dries and splits. It's a moderate water user & can grow in full sun. Available in 1 & 5G.

Weekly Gardening & Green Tip:
Planting rows of tall shrubs or small trees can provide a wind break. Hot winds can be even more damaging to your landscape than the heat of summer alone. The effect is like that of a blow dryer on your plants. Most of the afternoon wind in the Phoenix area is from the west, so that would be a good place for a living wall. Note: Before attempting to diagnose or treat any problem, be sure to either bring in a sample of the plant (or email us a photo) or a soil sample for verification with our Garden Pros. Also, please remember that we can't see it over the phone!

Green Tip:
Don't kill those weeds--eat 'em!! Several species of so-called weeds are actually edible. Examples include: purslane, dandelion, amaranth, storksbill, shepherd's purse & others. Make sure you haven't already sprayed them with weed killer & that they are thoroughly washed.

Feature Tree: Palo Blanco (Acacia willardiana)
A slender graceful upright deciduous/evergreen tree with sparse foliage up to 15 - 20' tall, 10 to 15' spread; peeling outer bark reveals the white inner bark; very small leaves at the end of elongated petioles. The common name translates into "White Stick", describing its unique peeling white bark. It is native to the rocky hillsides in Sonora Mexico. Its leaves are made up of a thin 4" midrib that divides to form two leaflets about 1 - 3" long. Each leaflet then bears ten tiny leaflets. The canopy is almost transparent providing only the very modest of shade. It has white to cream colored, catkin type flowers appearing in the spring. Slow growing & low water use. Available in 15G & 24" box.

Feature Plant: Monk's Pepper (Vitex rotundifolia)
Indigenous to Hawaii, it is a sprawling shrub 6 to 8' in diameter and 6" to 2' tall, but can reach 4' in height and 12' in width in protected areas. The round leaves are gray-green to silvery and 1 to 2" long. The foliage has a spicy fragrance. The 1" flowers are bluish purple and are produced in small clusters at the ends of the branches which become 1/4" round bluish black seeds. Drought & salt tolerant. Although it can be invasive if planted in coastal areas, here it becomes deciduous in the winter. Available in 1G.

Feature Plant: Purple Heart (Setcreasea pallida)
A native of Mexico, it's named for the striking purple color of the plant in full sun or light shade. The lance shaped leaves will reach 7" long by 1" wide and are covered with pale hairs. The fleshy stems are first erect, later lying on the ground as a creeping herb, around 16" long. They make an attractive basket subject and can be used as a ground cover.Blooming in mid-summer to early fall, the 1/2" pale pink flowers bloom at the ends of major stems. Available in 1G.

Dig this! Iris

The Sun Country Iris Society (SCIS) has completed digging iris rhizomes from 3 or the 4 gardens that were on the Southwest Region 2009 Trek in April. These rhizomes are now being sent to other iris societies in the region as well as being offered to our members at Iris Auction at our meetings. They will also be sold at a number of public sales throughout the fall.

Digging & preparing:
Iris rhizomes are dug to divide large clumps for replanting. Tall bearded irises are often divided every 3 – 4 years depending on the size of the clump. Optimum time for digging is September in the Valley of the Sun. Then they can be replanted soon afterwards. We prefer to plant in October when weather has started to cool. Carefully dig deep under the clump to avoid damaging rhizomes. The original mother rhizome is in the middle and the increases grow out from the mother. The SCIS recommends throwing the mother rhizome and any bloom stalks (heavy stalks that had blooms). Trim the roots off to about a fistful of roots. Trim the top of the leaves (fans) to a V at the top to the fans. In the Valley we usually trim the roots very close before planting.

Prepare beds for planting:
Choose a location that has 8 hours of full sun for maximum bloom. Dig soil to a depth of 10 – 12 inches.

Soil:
According to the basic iris handbook, the recommendation of pH is 6.1 to 7.2. As a soil chemist I think it is realistic to have a target of 6.5 to 7.3 for pH. Manures as recommended could be a problem. Desert produced manures contain high soluble salts so I like to stay away from that source of organics. They usually contain weed seeds and are not usually composted enough. Mulch that is formulated and inoculated microbially and composted that has low manure content works the best in Arizona soil conditions.
PH adjustment is necessary for most Arizona soils. Typical soil tests show a pH of 7.8 to 9.0 and above. A soil test is the most accurate method to determine the nutrients and soil amendments needed. The soil test I run comes with a prescription for the correct amount of amendments and fertilizer to correct problems. This usually saves money on cost of fertilizers. To adjust the pH use First Step Soil acidifier from Gardener’s World (more info at http://www.gardenpro.net/ information #1 handout)
Another key factor for good soil is the microbial content. Great Big Plants enhances the microbial content of the soil. Great Big plants is organic and contains 17 different microbes, many of which feed on detrimental fungus such as pythium, rhizoctonia and phytophora. You will also notice an increase in the number of worms in the soil because microbes feed on organic matter that contains microbes.
The handbook recommends aluminum sulfate. That should not be used in Arizona soils because it can cause retardation or mutations on iris.

Planting:

A dense shade tree, native to China & the Phillipines. It grows at a moderate rate to 40' x 35'. There are both male & female trees. The leaves change color in the fall to a brilliant red-orange, before dropping for the winter.

Feature Plant: Asparagus Fern

(Asparagus sprengerii [L] & meyeri [R])

A native of South Africa is not really a fern at all. Even though it may appear fern-like to the inexperienced eye, it has flowers and berries, so is clearly a highly modified angiosperm. The needle-like leaves are actually short branches called cladodes. The true leaves are initially green, but remain on the plant as inconspicuous dry scales. The plant will reach from 2 ' to 4 ' tall. It prefers full sun to part shade. The A. meyeri does better in shade. Taller stems will weep and make the plant a good basket subject. Available in 1G & 5G.

Feature Plant: Mexican Petunia (Ruellia spp.)
Native to Mexico & the southwestern US, this evergreen shrub averages about 3' x 3', except for the 'Katie' variety which is a dwarf (1' x 2'). It can spread through seed & by the stems bending to touch & root into the ground. The flowers are usually purple, but can be pink or white. Sprawling shrub or small tree (20-30' tall) that is native to subtropical and tropical South America, in southeastern Brazil, northern Argentina and Paraguay. While not a true pepper, the berries are often dried and sold as 'pink peppercorns'

Turk's Cap(Malvaviscus drummondii)

It ranges from the Texas coastal plain, east to Florida & also to the West Indies, Mexico & Cuba. It reaches a maximum size of 4' x 4'. It prefers well-drained soil & light shade. Its leaves have been used as an emolient and in Mexico the flowers are used in a decoction to treat inflammation of the digestive tract and as a menstrual aid. The marble-size red fruit is edible, having a mealy taste, and is enjoyed by a number of birds and animals. The flowers provide nectar to eager ruby-throated hummingbirds and several species of butterflies. Malvaviscus is from a Greek word meaning "sticky mallow". Available in 1 & 5 gallon.

Feature Plant:

Yellow Dot (Wedelia trilobata)

Native to the northern part of South America & the West Indies. It's a creeping evergreen perennial that roots at the leaf nodes. The leaves are 3-lobed ovate. The flowers are yellow & daisy-like. It's an excellent ground cover that can take sun to filtered light, but doesn't tolerate wet soils. Available in 1G.

Feature Tree: Blue-leaf Wattle (Acacia saligna)
Native to Australia, this Acacia grows as a small, dense, spreading tree with a short trunk & a weeping habit. It grows up to 30' tall. Like many Acacia species, it has phyllodes rather than true leaves; these can be up to 10" long. The yellow flowers appear in early spring and late winter, in groups of up to ten bright yellow spherical flower heads.Available in 15G & 24" Box

Feature Shrub: Mexican Feather Grass (Nassella tennuisima)
Mexican feather grass occurs naturally on rocky slopes, dry open woods and dry prairies from New Mexico & Texas south through central Mexico. It's a graceful & delicate ornamental grass that grows in a dense fountain like clump with slender, wiry stems 1-2' tall. The leaves are 6-14" long. They are rolled inward very tightly so that they appear as thin wiry filaments. Available in 1 & 5G.It's on our sale!

A species of succulent plant known by the common names of Hottentot fig & Sea fig. It's probably native to south Africa, but is familiar to the coastline of western North America, where it is an introduced species that has taken hold and become commonplace. It has long stems and fleshy, pointed leaves which are triangular in cross-section. Its flowers are magenta & bloom mainly in spring. Available in 1G. It's on our sale!
